22% of Americans say they fell into their job instead of picking it

22% of Americans say they ‘fell’ into their job instead of picking it 22% of Americans say they ‘fell’ into their job instead of picking it Much like sauntering through life in autopilot mode,  startling new findings from LinkedIn  on what they call   “career sleepwalking” show that 22% of Americans report “that they ‘fell’ into their job” instead of picking it themselves.  Furthermore, the research found that “the average American has” had the same position for 9.88 years, and this number is 13.91 years among those who are older than 55.LinkedIn polled a group of more than 2,000 American professionals, with Generation Z classified as people who are younger than 24.What keeps American workers goingHere’s what people say “motivates” them - clearly, cash is king. Salary: 43% Work-life balance: 40% Opportunity to learn and grow: 22% Making an impact: 18% Here’s how Americans really feel about their careersWhile 23% of Americans surveyed said that their lives feel like being “‘on a treadmill going nowhere,'”  it seems like younger workers are actually itching to make big changes. More than one-fifth of people polled under age 24 said that they have held down a minimum of four full-time positions.Eighty percent of people younger than 24 agreed that they would think about changing their careers in terms of the “function or industry.” This is also echoed in the finding that the “younger generation is more than 3x more likely to change jobs” than Baby Boomers. But this data point is the real kicker: 47% of people surveyed within the ages of 35 and 44 - with more than 10 years of working experience under their belts - say they don’t know “what their career path should look like.”

7 Ways Coworking Can Help You Grow Your Career

7 Ways Coworking Can Help You Grow Your Career 7 Ways Coworking Can Help You Grow Your Career Coworking is currently a booming trend. All around the world, coworking spaces are springing up like mushrooms after the rain. These membership-based community workplaces are perfect for freelancers, small entrepreneurs, startups or just any independent professionals who want to have a stable workspace they could go to every morning. If you work on your own, or you’re a really small team that can’t afford to rent their own office, you typically end up working from home or a coffee shop down the street. These may work well for a month or two, but it can get really annoying and ineffective after some time. Home office is free, that’s great, but there are way too many disturbing and demotivating factors sneaking up on you at home. Coffee houses, on the other hand, are too loud and impractical because you have to order one coffee after another if you want the staff to let you sit and work there all day. A coworking space offers you the best possible combination of keeping your freelancers independence and having a corporate-style work pattern. That’s why coworking is getting so popular. Still not convinced? Wait until you read these 7 major benefits of coworking and maybe you’ll change your mind! 1. Full focus on work When you’re working, you don’t want to be thinking about grocery shopping or what the girls sitting at the next table are talking about. You want to and should focus on work in order to move your business forward. Unlike home office or working from a coffee shop, working in a coworking space boosts your productivity and your business results will rocket! 2. You build a routine Having a daily routine makes your work more effective. A coworking space still allows you to be a free agent, but having a paid membership and a table setup in an office is a great motivator. Even if you’re your own boss, it’s good to have a reason to get up early, dress nicely and go somewhere to work every day. Almost like a 9-5 kind of job. 3. Networking, our daily bread In a coworking space you’ll broaden your professional network. There are plenty of interesting people working along with you, who you can share ideas and experience with. Aside from that, you make new friends and you can help each other. There’s no place like coworking if you seek advice from people. 4. You learn as you go Coworking spaces usually organize various events, workshops or meetups where you can learn plenty of new things or expand your existing knowledge and skill. Being in such a stimulative space enhances your creativity and your ideas will flow in currents. 5. Less competition A big advantage of coworking is the lack of direct competition among coworkers, which makes a great work environment. Unlike in the usual open space offices, coworkers are usually individuals or small teams working in all sorts of different spheres so they don’t represent your competition. No schemes, internal conflicts or intrigue   what a bliss! 6. Sense of connection Many freelancers working from home get lonely at some point. Constant home office might eventually make you feel alienated from the outside world. In a coworking space, you’ll feel a part of the community again. Being among people may help you in many ways it’ll increase your productivity and stimulate your motivation. 7. Goodbye, blue Mondays Wouldn’t it be great to look forward to going to work on Monday? According to several studies, people working in coworking spaces tend to be happier and more content with their work than in other workspaces. It’s great for your business too if you love going to work, it will thrive. And of course, a side effect of being happy at work is being happy in life. There are lots of other advantages of coworking, but for now, we think we’ve given you enough reasons to look around you for the nearest coworking space. Maybe there’s one in your city or town! In case there isn’t, you can get inspired by our list of 10 coolest coworking spaces around the world (according to us at least) and go for a little business getaway! All the Scientific Proof You Need to Convince Your Boss to Let You Work From Home

All the Scientific Proof You Need to Convince Your Boss to Let You Work From Home All the Scientific Proof You Need to Convince Your Boss to Let You Work From Home I know a lot of people want, need, or just prefer to work from home. I’m no different. In fact, I’m writing this from my home office right now. I’m super fortunate that work-from-home days are part of our  benefits package at The Penny Hoarder, but some bosses still need convincing. If yours is one of them, maybe this news will help sway them. The Considerable Benefits of Working From Home Stanford Business Senior Editor Shana Lynch recently wrote about the  results of a study conducted by Stanford business professor Nicholas Bloom, who tracked employees at Chinese travel agency Ctrip to help the company understand the impact of workplace flexibility. “[Ctrip] solicited worker volunteers for a study in which half worked from home for nine months, coming into the office one day a week, and half worked only from the office,” explains Lynch. The performance of employees who worked from home shot up by 13%. Bloom attributes the increase to two things. He says workers concentrate better when they work from home and are more likely to work a full shift when they aren’t dealing with  commutes, long lunches, and other distractions. The study also discovered the rate of resignations at Ctrip “dropped by 50% when employees were allowed to work from home.” The company also reported it made about $2,000 more profit per work-from-home employee. So, let’s recap: Employees who work from home perform better, are more focused and less distracted, quit less often, and increase a company’s financial profit. On a larger scale, work-from-home options help conserve oil, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and save companies buckets of money. (Apparently, anything is possible when employees are allowed to work from home. It probably also relieves dry skin, promotes hair growth, and cures bad breath. Those things just haven’t been studied yet.) Anyway, if the results of Bloom’s study aren’t enough to convince your boss that employees should be able to work from home, lay  these additional benefits  on them. You can also arm yourself with proof that  working from home increases productivity. If your boss won’t go for remote working at all,  try negotiating for a shorter work day. Still no luck? Don’t let it get you down. In reality, only about  7% of US workplaces offer telecommuting benefits. And to be perfectly honest,  working from home isn’t always as awesome as it sounds. Except when it is. This article was originally published on The Penny Hoarder. It has been republished here with permission.

Educational Requirements - How to Qualify for a Job

Educational Requirements - How to Qualify for a Job Educational Requirements - How to Qualify for a Job When looking at job descriptions as you research occupations during the second step of the career planning process, there should be a section titled Educational Requirements or something similar, for example, Required Training or Qualifications. Dont skim past this. It is critical information. It will let you learn how to become qualified to work in an occupation you are considering. The educational requirements may serve as a way to narrow down a list of possible career options. It is essential to know whether you are willing to put that much time into training. What Do Educational Requirements Include? A job description should provide information about the entry-level requirements for an occupation, as well as those for career advancement. It may specify one way to prepare, or it may list alternatives if there are several. These qualifications could be a combination of an academic degree, vocational degree, post-secondary certificate, formal or informal training, a professional license, and voluntary certification from a professional association. Academic or Vocational Degree or Post-Secondary Certificate: A job description may indicate that one needs a college or graduate school degree in a particular major, for example, a Bachelors or Masters Degree in Business, or it may not specify what field of study the degree must be in. The occupation may require a vocational degree or a post-secondary certificate that could take anywhere from a few months to two years to earn. It may state that the degree or certification should come from an accredited program. You may learn that to enter a field you need only a high school or equivalency diploma, or no formal education at all. Handss of formal training are apprenticeships, internships, cooperative education, and on-the-job training. Informal training could include volunteer experience or other exposure that will prepare you to do the job. Professional License: A license, sometimes referred to as certification or registration, is needed to work in some occupations. A job description will tell you if this is required nationwide or is compulsory in some or most states. Do not confuse mandatory certification with voluntary certification, a creditional that will be discussed later. It will also state what the steps are to getting licensed, for example, how much experience one needs and whether there is a written or practical exam. You can also use the  Licensed Occupations Tool from CareerOneStop  to learn what the rules are for different occupations in every state. Voluntary Certification: This credential, in contrast to mandatory certification or a license, is strictly voluntary. Some professional associations grant voluntary certification to individuals who demonstrate competence in an occupation or industry. Although not required, earning this stamp of approval could make you a more desirable job candidate. Some employers may only hire those who have it. How to Find the Training You Need When there are stringent requirements for entry into an occupation, for instance, training must come from an accredited program,  it will be a bit harder to figure out what institution to attend. You cant just simply choose a college or vocational school because of its location, for example. These are several ways to go about finding out where to go. Professional associations are a valuable resource when it comes to locating accredited or approved educational and training programs. First, use any search engine to find the professional association related to  the occupation. Once you are on that organizations website, look for a section about education or careers. There will likely be a list of programs, as well, or links to resources you can use to locate that information. The CareerOneStop  Find Local Training Tool, sponsored by the US Department of Labor, is an excellent source for locating information about short-term training programs, colleges, certifications, apprenticeships, and internships. Search by occupation, school, or program along with the city  and, state, or zip code. Network to connect with individuals who work in the occupation you want to enter. Conduct informational interviews with them to learn the best ways to go about preparing for it. It is especially helpful to do this if there are alternatives. For example, someone with experience will be able to tell you whether getting a college degree provides better training than earning a vocational degree? Get all the facts about educational requirements when exploring careers. It will allow you to make an informed choice as well as help you achieve your goals.

How to Handle Anonymous Job Postings

How to Handle Anonymous Job Postings How to Handle Anonymous Job Postings 6After what feels like a super long job search (and perhaps with not much to show for it), you finally come across a job posting that is perfect for you. Not only do you have all of the necessary qualifications for the position, but it seems like a job that you could grow in for years to come. The only caveat: the company (or person) chose to list the job as an anonymous job posting. As a job seeker, you’re bound to come across anonymous job postings every now and then. But does that mean you should ditch the job posting and keep on searching? Not necessarily. Here’s how to handle an anonymous job posting. Understand why the posting is anonymous. Job postings can be anonymous for a variety of reasons- and not all of them are nefarious. Here are just a few: They don’t want their competitors to know they’re hiring. Some employers post anonymously because they dont want their competitors or the media to know theyre hiring. Recruiters who are hired to recruit for companies post anonymously because they dont want job seekers contacting the company directly- they want everyone to apply through them. It’s a well-known brand. Let’s say you’re looking for virtual admin work- and Kim Kardashian is hiring. Imagine the millions of people who would apply for the position simply because of who she is. That’s why a potential employer would post anonymously- to ensure that they don’t receive a deluge of job applications simply because of a brand name. They want to make sure that they receive quality applications from qualified applicants, and being anonymous is one way to achieve that. It’s a scam. It’s true that anonymous job postings and job scams can go hand-in-hand. And some scammers use anonymous job postings to trick job seekers into applying to scam jobs. But if you know the signs of a job scam, you can safely apply for a position without risking getting scammed. Make sure the posting gives other details. Anonymous job postings should still be able to give you a good amount of detail about the jobs responsibilities and parameters. Anonymous job postings that offer few details about the job should be handled cautiously by job seekers because thats often a sign of a scam. Do your research. The easiest way to track down the company behind an anonymous job posting is to do a search for a piece of the job description. Use a sentence in the description that is very particular to that job- not something generic that would appear in most job listings. Then, do a Google search for that phrase or sentence, with quotes around it. If the posting appears anywhere else on the web, itll come up in the search results and it might contain the companys information. Now that you know the potential reasons why an employer might post a job description anonymously, it’s up to you to determine if you’re actually willing to apply for the job. This is where job seekers need to weigh the pros and cons of taking the time and energy to apply for the position. Consider Your Next Move If you’re tempted to put on your Sherlock hat and start hunting for clues as to what the company or brand might be, be careful. While you shouldn’t be discouraged from interacting with the actual poster behind the anonymous job posting, it can be construed by the employer in both a positive- and a negative- light. On the one hand, a company may find your efforts to unmask the job posting to be creative. They might view your research skills (and deductive reasoning) as a positive characteristic, or a sign that you’ll go the extra mile to get a job done. On the other hand, if a company is trying to remain anonymous in their hiring but is found out by a job seeker, they may see it as an overreach. They might view you as “too aggressive” and overstepping your boundaries as a job seeker. They might even go so far as to disregard your application entirely. Ultimately, your job search is your own and yours to handle how you see fit. If you see a job position that you really, truly want but it’s anonymous, take the time to assess whether it’s a) a real job and b) if you want to apply for it. You never know, it might become the job of your dreams. Readers, have you applied for (or shied away from) anonymous job postings? Let us know in the comments section below!

Small Business Management Redefined By Millennials

Small Business Management Redefined By Millennials Small Business Management Redefined By Millennials Small Business Management Redefined By Millennials Conlan While proprietors who are 35 and under make up the smallest age demographic among all small-business owners, they are definitely leaving their mark. Tech-savvy and innovative, this new generation is changing expectations, particularly in how they recruit and engage their workforce. They often value workplace flexibility in their own lives, and extend that mindset totheir employees. Heres a look at the next generation of small-business owners is adapting to the evolving job market by rethinking their management best practices. Using Social Media to Connect and Recruit Social media has been a boon for small businesses. Its easy to connect with customers and share company culture and insights. Two-thirds of large businesses use social media to recruit according to the Society for Human Resource Management. It also gives small businesses a means to effectively compete for top talent. I have had great results using social media to generate interest and find ideal candidates for jobs, says Jon Kline, founder of MKE Production Rental in Milwaukee. Some of our best job candidates have been referred from customers on social media. Placing a Higher Value on Soft Skills Sara Dabby, head of talent at ClickTime, a timesheet software company in San Francisco, acknowledges that recruiting and hiring for a small company is very different from hiring at a large firm. One big difference: a candidates interpersonal skills (often referred to as soft skills) will often have a much larger influence on the bottom line. When the successes or failures of the company are determined by teamwork and collaboration, soft skills become more crucial, Dabby says. One bad apple can ruin morale on a small team, so its imperative to weed those out and make sure everyone on the team is positive, friendly and makes peoples lives better. Looking Beyond the Usual Benefits Erica Knight is a Millennial business owner who uses unique company benefits and team perks to differentiate her Arizona-based marketing companys culture and recruiting strategy. The Knight Agency offers workers telecommuting options, flexible scheduling, incentive programs, monthly team outings and a team-building activities. Rounding out the available lifestyle perks: companys free facial and skincare products from a local spa, free gym membership and up to $100 per month at top local restaurants. Weekly group Pilates sessions help boost team-building efforts and relieve stress at work. Investing in Engagement This generation of small business owners is also looking for new ways to develop and retain top talent. Employee engagement is very different in small business, especially with Millennials, Kline says. He makes sure to have multiple meetings annually with each employee to find out what their personal goals are and what parts of the job they like the most. Because small businesses are so agile, its a lot easier to shape the future of the company around the type of work your employees are particularly good at and enjoy doing, Kline says. Building Something That Lasts While independence and wealth are common reasons for starting a business, todays entrepreneurs are looking to leave their mark and help others. I started my business because I felt like there must be people out there like me, who needed equipment for small to medium-sized video shoots, Kline says. A lot of people getting started cant afford to buy everything they need. It also helps to have a local resource for learning about the equipment and the industry. Randy and I started the business out of a desire to build something great, says Angie Stocklin, referring to herself and her husband. She is chief operating officer and co-founder of One Click, a Greenwood, Indiana-based company that helps people buy eyewear online. We wanted to create a place where not only we loved to work, but also where our team members loved to work. We wanted to build a business from the ground up that could have a lasting impression on our community.

Attend a Job Fair to Boost Your Job Search Find Your Dream Job

Attend a Job Fair to Boost Your Job Search â€" Find Your Dream Job Attend a Job Fair to Boost Your Job Search - Find Your Dream Job While some people find job fairs (also known as career fairs) to be stressful or overwhelming, they are in fact an excellent way to bolster your job search. A job fair is an ideal place to meet representatives of various companies at once. You can network with both employers and other job seekers in your industry. Even if you do not wind up with a job, you can gain inside information about numerous industries and expand your network. Today you are going to find an upcoming job fair to attend. Follow the tips below to find the best job fair for you, and to make the most out of your job fair experience. Find the Right Job Fair There are a variety of types of job fairs.  Many are multi-employer, in-person fairs, typically held at a convenient location such as a hotel or conference center. There are also online job fairs. Often, fairs are organized by industry or by audience (such as Women for Hire, which holds online career fairs for women). There are a number of regular career fairs throughout the country. For example, National Career Fairs holds over 400 annual career fairs in cities around the U.S. When looking for the right job fair for you, check for fairs in your city or state, or consider a virtual fair. Tips for Job Fair Success Dress professionally. You will be meeting with various recruiters and company representatives, so you need to dress appropriately. Wear a professional outfit that you would wear to an interview. However, be sure to wear comfortable shoes, because you will be standing up for a long time. Bring Your Resume. Bring several copies of your resume to give to representatives. Also bring your business cards (which you made on Day 10) to exchange with both representatives and other job seekers you meet at the fair. Keep a notepad and paper handy as well, in case you want to take notes. Prepare Your Elevator Speech. Come up with a brief, 1 - 2 sentence statement that defines your experience and skills. This will be useful when you are introducing yourself to representatives; it will briefly explain who you are and for what sorts of jobs you are an ideal fit. Consider using a form of your branding statement (which you created on Day 2) as your elevator speech. Practice Interview Questions and Answers. Each time you meet a company representative, you are participating in a mini interview. Prepare for these mini interviews by practicing your answers to common interview questions, such as questions about your career goals and relevant skills. Also come up with a few questions to ask the company representatives to demonstrate your interest in each company. Network. Job fairs are places not only to meet employers, but also other job seekers. Chat with people you meet in line or at various booths. Give out and collect business cards. Even if you do not get a job at the job fair, you will still be expanding your professional network, which could lead to a job opportunity further down the line. Keep Up Your Energy. You want to leave the recruiters with a positive impression, so remember to smile and maintain a warm, friendly tone in conversations. Even if you feel your energy is lagging (especially towards the end of the fair), try to keep a positive attitude â€" it will go a long way. Say Thank You. Take the time to send a brief thank you note or email to the representatives you meet at the job fair. This will solidify your interest in the company, and remind them of why you are a strong candidate.

Science says a bubble bath is better for your mental health than shower

Science says a bubble bath is better for your mental health than shower Science says a bubble bath is better for your mental health than shower It’s time to start scrubbing out your bathtub because a new  study  suggests you may be missing out on a number of mental and physical health benefits  by choosing a rinse in the shower over a soak in the tub. No one would argue over the allure of a relaxing bubble bath, yet showering is still the most common form of bathing worldwide. Maybe you shower because it’s a timesaver. Or, maybe it’s a way to conserve water. Whatever the reason may be, these newly-researched bathtime health benefits will have you reconsidering your shower routine. In the new study, researchers from the Japan Health and Research Center, Tokyo City University and Jichi Medical University examined whether there were health benefits of taking a bath instead of a shower. It turns out, there were. The study included 33 Japanese people that were recruited online, at random, to participate. After spending two weeks bathing in only bathtubs, followed by two weeks in only showers, the subject’s self-reported th eir health status and completed a survey that gauged how each bathing method impacted both their mental and physical health.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!According to the study, subjects reported that the two-week bathtub bathing period improved their health and skin conditions and decreased fatigue, stress and pain. They also said using a bath instead of a shower stimulated various physical benefits. Researchers hypothesize this has to do with hyperthermic  action, which increases body temperature, stimulates the metabolism and eliminates metabolic  waste products â€" ultimately, causing the body to feel refreshed. Although this study has its limitations, such as the small sample size and limited Japanese demographic, there’s still a compelling case as to why baths trump showers in terms of individual health. We get it, you may just be more of a shower gal. But every o nce in a while, it may be nice to get the water running, throw in some bubbles and play your favorite chill-out playlist for a change. After all, you deserve some quality relaxation time.
